Man dies in hospital weeks after shooting at Kansas City gas station, police say
A man died Thursday morning after being hospitalized for weeks with gunshot wounds, police said.
Police identified Ronnie Hardman, 44, as the second person to die after a shooting near a gas station at East 35th Street and Prospect Avenue.
Officers responded to the BP gas station parking lot just after 1:30 a.m. June 14. They found four people there suffering from gunshot wounds, said Sgt. Phil DiMartino, a police spokesman.
One woman and a man had critical injuries when police arrived, DiMartino said. Two other men had injuries police believed to be not life-threatening. Officers began life-saving measures while paramedics were en route.
Paramedics then took all four people to a hospital, where a short time later, the woman was pronounced dead, DiMartino said.
Police later identified the woman as Monique K. Smith, 34.
Officers then responded to another reported shooting about half a mile away in the 2000 block of East Linwood Boulevard. They found a man who police said was involved in the shooting near a gas station at 35th Street and Prospect Avenue.
However, police have not yet said how the man was involved. The man was taken to a hospital with critical injuries, DiMartino said.
Hospital staff notified detectives Thursday that Hardman, one of the men critically injured, died from his injuries.
The man’s death is Kansas City’s 86th homicide this year, according to data tracked by The Star. At this time last year, the city had recorded 78 homicides.
