Four people were shot and one woman died in Kansas City’s Oak Park neighborhood Saturday morning, police said.

Officers responded just after 1:30 a.m. to Prospect Avenue and East 35th Street on a reported shooting. They found four people in a BP gas station parking lot suffering from gunshot wounds, said Sgt. Phil DiMartino, a police spokesman.

Police found one woman and a man with critical injuries, DiMartino said. Two other men had non-life threatening injuries. Officers began life-saving measures while paramedics were en route.

Paramedics took all four people to a hospital, where a short time later, the woman was pronounced dead, DiMartino said.

Police have not released the name and age of the woman.

Officers later responded to another reported shooting about half a mile away in the 2000 block of East Linwood Boulevard. They found a man who police said was involved in the shooting near a gas station at 35th Street and Prospect Avenue.

However, police have not said how the man was involved. The man was taken to a hospital with critical injuries, DiMartino said.

As of Saturday morning, no one was in custody. Detectives are trying to determine what led up to the shooting.

Investigators were looking for witnesses and surveillance footage in the area. Crime scene investigators collected physical evidence Saturday.

The killing is Kasnas City’s 73rd homicide this year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings.. At this time last year, the city had recorded 69 homicides.
