Man killed in shooting on Cypress Ave in Kansas City’s Knoches Park neighborhood

Update: Kansas City police identified the victim as 29-year-old Rayondre Johnson, according to a press release from police spokesperson Alayna Gonzalez.

A shooting late Sunday killed a man in the Knoches Park neighborhood of Kansas City, a police spokesman said.

Officers responded to a reported shooting shortly before 10 p.m. in the 3300 block of Cypress Avenue, where they found a man lying in the front yard of a home, said Capt. Jake Becchina with the Kansas City Police Department.

Officers rendered aid until emergency medical workers arrived and took over. The victim, however, died at the scene.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the victim had an interaction with one or more others that escalated into gunfire in front of the home, and the man was struck by gunfire, Becchina said.

No suspect information was released.

The killing is Kansas City’s 84th of the year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. That compares to 75 homicides reported by this time last year.

Detectives and crime scene investigators collected evidence and searched the area for witnesses to determine what led up to the shooting.

Detectives ask anyone with any information about the homicide to call the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-TIPS (8744). Information submitted anonymously to the hotline can earn a reward of up to $25,000.
