Teen found fatally wounded behind a gas station east of downtown Kansas City
Update: Police identified the victim as 18-year-old Jeremiah Jones.
A teen died after he was found shot behind a gas station Sunday evening in Kansas City’s Sheffield neighborhood, a police spokesman said.
Officers responded shortly after 8:30 p.m. to a reported disturbance in the 5400 block of Winner Road, said Sgt. Phil DiMartino with the Kansas City Police Department.
Security guards from a nearby apartment complex directed officers to a BP gas station, where they believed someone had been shot. Behind the gas station, officers found the teen suffering from gunshot wounds, DiMartino said.
Officers began lifesaving measures and requested emergency medical services. The victim was taken to a hospital where he died a short time later, DiMartino said.
The victim was identified as 18-year-old Jeremiah Jones.
The teen’s death is being investigated as a homicide. No one is in custody, and no suspect information has been released.
Detectives and crime scene investigators collected evidence and searched the area for witnesses and possible surveillance video to determine what led up to the shooting.
The killing is Kansas City’s 80th homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. That compares to 72 homicides reported by this time last year.
