Man found dead near KC college campus, apartment building. Police say it’s a homicide
Update: Kansas City police have identified the victim as 62-year-old Jerry L. Terry. The investigation into Terry’s death is ongoing, Capt. Jake Becchina said in a press release.
Kansas City police are investigating a homicide near an apartment building and college campus in Midtown Thursday.
Officers responded around 6:45 a.m. to the 3400 block of Broadway Boulevard after a security guard for Metropolitan Community College found a man laying unresponsive in a parking lot near the Penn Valley Heath Science Institute.
When officers arrived, they found the man unresponsive on the sidewalk with significant injuries, but the manner of the man’s death is unknown, according to Capt. Jake Becchina, a police spokesman.
Paramedics responded and pronounced the man dead at the scene.
Police have not yet publicly identified the man.
Around 9:30 a.m., crime scene personnel were seen collecting evidence and homicide unit detectives were looking for witnesses in the area.
A tent was set up in the back parking lot of the Midtown Plaza Apartments, where some residents could be seen looking down at the scene below. Several KCPD vehicles and police tape blocked off the parking lot.
Medical examiners were beginning to evaluate a possible cause and manner of death Thursday, Becchina said.
The killing is Kansas City’s 72nd homicide this year, according to data maintained by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. At this time last year, the city had recorded 68 homicides.
