Kansas City police are investigating a shooting that killed a man Saturday morning.

Officers responded just after 2 a.m. to the 4200 block of College Avenue on a shooting call. They found a man unresponsive and suffering from gunshot wounds on a sidewalk in front of a house, according to Capt. Jake Becchina, a police spokesman.

Officers rendered aid to the man as paramedics were en route to the scene. The man was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Police identified the man Saturday as Dante Franklin, 50.

In a preliminary investigation, detectives found that Franklin had an interaction in front of the residence that escalated and led to gunfire, Becchina said.

In the early hours Saturday, homicide detectives could be seen interviewing witnesses who were in the area of the shooting, as crime scene personnel processed the scene for evidence.

No one was in custody in connection with the shooting as of Saturday morning.

The killing is Kansas City’s 60th homicide this year, according to data maintained by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. At this time last year, the city had recorded 55 homicides.

If anyone has information about the shooting, they are urged to contact Homicide Unit detectives directly at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-8477. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted anonymously to the TIPS Hotline.
