Police find body believed to be missing 4-year-old boy in Belton pond

A search for a missing boy in Belton ended Friday night after police found a body believed to be his in a pond.

The 4-year-old boy was first reported missing around 4 p.m. in rural Belton, according to Ronnie Lozano, a Cass County Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

Dozens of law enforcement agencies and first responders searched the area of 187th Street and Y Highway in south Belton for hours after his disappearance. They searched nearby wooded areas, roads and bodies of water with the help of drones, boats and a helicopter from the Kansas City Police Department.

At approximately 10:20 p.m., first responders recovered what appears to be the boy’s body from a pond, Lozano said.

The boy’s identity has not yet been released by authorities.

“We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family of the child,” Lozano said in a news release.

The death is under investigation and there was no other information available Saturday.
