Suspicious death of woman in south Kansas City home ruled a homicide, police say

Update: The deceased has been identified as Shelli Perrey, 67.

A woman’s suspicious death in a south Kansas City residence is now being investigated as a homicide after a medical examiner finding, police said.

Officers were dispatched around 7 p.m. Tuesday to the 9000 block of Blue Ridge Boulevard, near East 90th Street, for a welfare check.

Responding officers found a woman inside a residence unresponsive and deceased, according to Capt. Jake Becchina, a Kansas City police spokesman.

The extent of the woman’s injuries were unknown.

Police ruled the death suspicious and called detectives to the scene. A death investigation was underway Tuesday.

Overnight, a medical examiner made a preliminary finding of homicide as the manner of death in the case, Becchina said.

Homicide detectives are working to identify the victim and their exact cause of death, Becchina said.

The killing is Kansas City’s 40th homicide this year according to data maintained by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. At this time last year, the city had recorded 34 homicides.

Anyone with information about the death is urged to contact Homicide detectives directly at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-8477. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted anonymously to the TIPS hotline.
