One man killed in shooting at Northland apartment, Kansas City police say
One man died in a shooting at a Northland apartment Tuesday, Kansas City police said.
Officers responded to a reported shooting around 10 p.m. Tuesday at the 4000 block of North Bennington Avenue. They were directed to an apartment building where they found a man, 19-year-old Dewayne Toombs, suffering from a gunshot wound, said Sgt. Phil DiMartino, a police spokesperson.
Officers helped Toombs until paramedics arrived and transported him to a hospital with critical injuries. He was pronounced dead at the hospital just after 11:30 p.m.
DiMartino said the shooting is being investigated as a homicide. Investigators are trying to determine what led up to the shooting.
As of Wednesday morning, no one was in custody and there was no suspect information.
Detectives are searching for witnesses and crime scene personnel are gathering evidence.
The killing is Kansas City’s 31st homicide of 2025, according to data maintained by The Star. At this time last year, the city had recorded 30 homicides.
