A man is in custody after a disturbance left one woman dead and another injured at an apartment in the Red Bridge South neighborhood of south Kansas City, a police spokesman said.

Officers responded to the disturbance about 11:30 p.m. at an apartment at the Coach House Apartments & Townhomes in the 600 block of East Minor Drive, said Capt. Jake Becchina with the Kansas City Police Department.

Arriving officers were directed to an apartment where they found the victims with unknown injuries. Becchina said one woman was unresponsive with significant injuries. The other had minor injuries and was alert and talking.

Officers started first aid on the victims and called for an ambulance. Emergency medical workers took the victims to a hospital, where the woman with the significant injuries was pronounced dead. The other woman had non-life-threatening injuries.

The deceased victim was identify as 22-year-old Dayteonna Thompson, Becchina said Thursday afternoon.

‘Subject of interest’ found at apartment complex

Based on information given to police, additional officers found a man a short distance away within the apartment complex. Police took the man, whom they call a “subject of interest,” into custody for further investigation.

Police believe that the man and the victims knew each other and detectives were not searching for any additional suspects, Becchina said.

Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators responded, looking for witnesses and collecting evidence.

The death is Kansas City’s 29th homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. That compares to 30 homicides reported by this time last year.
