‘Cleaning up the streets’: Man arrested after stolen street sweeper found at KC sports bar
A Clay County Sheriff deputy arrested a man last week after he was found outside a Northland sports bar with a stolen street sweeper, according to the sheriff’s office.
“We’re ‘cleaning up the streets’ of Clay County!” the Clay County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday in a post on social media.
At about 12:45 a.m. Tuesday, Kansas City police requested help from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office to find a recently stolen street sweeper truck that was taken from the area of Missouri 152 and North Oak Trafficway in Kansas City, North.
The truck, a white 2020 Ford 250 modified for street cleaning, belonged to All Care Services LLC of Leawood and was identified as Truck 3 with a Kansas license plate, according to the sheriff’s office. The alleged thief was described as a man wearing a bright yellow hooded sweatshirt.
The deputy heard police talking on their radio channel that the truck and man were stationary in the parking lot of Captain’s Sports Lounge at 10221 North Oak Trafficway, according to the sheriff’s office. Kansas City police also said there was a disturbance call behind the bar.
The deputy responded and saw the truck parked near the bar’s entrance. The deputy also saw a man in a bright yellow hooded sweatshirt and a woman in the nearly empty parking lot.
The woman was walking toward another vehicle in the lot. Believing the woman was possibly involved, the deputy stopped her and quickly determined she was not involved, according to the sheriff’s department.
The deputy then approached the man standing directly next to the driver’s door of the truck and asked him if the truck belonged to him. The man allegedly replied, “No.”
The officer then pointed his firearm at the man and ordered him to the ground, taking him into custody without further incident.
When searching the man, the deputy allegedly found a phone with the label “Truck 3” in his sweatshirt pocket.
Kansas City police took custody of the man and the stolen vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office.
The case remains under investigation and detectives will present their findings to prosecutors for possible charges, said Capt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department.
