The Independence Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting in a residential area just east of Missouri 291 Highway Friday.

Officers responded just before 3 a.m. to the 16800 block of East 5th Street North on a shots fired call. They found a woman inside a residence suffering from a gunshot wound.

Paramedics responded and pronounced the woman dead at the scene.

Police have not yet publicly identified the victim.

The killing is the first homicide of the year in Independence, according to data maintained by The Star. At this time last year, Independence had not recorded any homicides.

In 2024, there were 11 homicides in Independence, data from The Star shows.
