Argument leads to fatal stabbing in Kansas City home, police say. A woman is in custody
Kansas City Police Department detectives are investigating a homicide after officers found a man stabbed to death at a residence early Tuesday morning.
Officers responded just before 2 a.m. to the 500 block of Quincy Avenue to a reported cutting call. They found a residence with the door open and several people outside asking for police to come to the home.
Inside, officers found a man suffering from apparent stab wounds, said Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a spokeswoman for KCPD, in an email. Officers helped give medical aid to the man until paramedics arrived and transported the victim to a hospital.
Doctors pronounced the man dead at the hospital, Gonzalez said.
Police later identified the man as Darrell McKelby, 23.
“(A) preliminary investigation indicates the incident may have started over a verbal argument that escalated to violence,” Gonzalez said in an email.
The victim’s mother was identified at the scene and taken into police custody for further questioning, Gonzalez said. As of Tuesday morning, police were not looking for additional suspects.
Homicide detectives and crime scene personnel are collecting evidence and gathering witness statements.
The killing is Kansas City’s 16th homicide of 2025, according to data maintained by The Star. At this time last year, the city had recorded five homicides.
