Think warm thoughts, KC. Wind chills plunge to near zero, but bitter cold won’t last
Folks headed out on their early Thursday morning trips were brutally reminded that it is indeed December in Kansas City.
A strong front with bitter cold moved into the area overnight, sending temperatures tumbling into the mid-teens and wind chills plunging to near zero degrees at Kansas City International Airport.
The last time Kansas City was this cold was on Feb. 28, when temperatures fell to 12 degrees.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will remain below freezing and climb to 27 degrees, well below the typical 45-degree average this time of year. People will want to keep bundled up.
A bitter cold is expected again overnight as temperatures fall into the upper teens. This will lead to another cold starting Friday morning.
Wild temperature swing coming to KC
The cold weather is in stark contrast to the unusually warm weather early this week. Temperatures in the metro on Wednesday climbed to 55 degrees.
While the end of the work week will start off cold, temperatures will begin their wild swing in the other direction.
The weather service said Friday’s temperatures will rebound to around 42 degrees. Overnight, temperatures will dip a few degrees below freezing.
A weekend warm up
Warmer weather is expected through the weekend, with “highs climbing into the 50s and potentially touching 60 degrees on Sunday,” the weather service said.
There is a low chance of precipitation Sunday evening and overnight, mainly east of Kansas City, the weather service said.
The weather service said temperatures will return to more seasonal levels next week. On Monday, it will be around 50 degrees, and then they will be in the low 40s on Tuesday and Wednesday.
