FBI agent shoots, kills person during task force investigation in KC’s Northland
An FBI agent executing a federal search warrant shot and killed a person who was allegedly armed inside a home in Kansas City’s Northland, a spokeswoman with the Federal Bureau of Investigation said in a news release.
The police shooting occurred as members of the FBI Child Exploitation and Human Trafficking Task Force went to a home in the 3000 block of Northwest 73rd Street in the Platte Brook subdivision, the FBI said in a statement.
The task force members went to the home to serve a federal search warrant issued by the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Missouri, according to the statement.
The FBI said law enforcement officials announced who they were and knocked on the door. After receiving no response, they entered the home and encountered an person who was allegedly armed, the FBI said. The person was struck with gunfire and died at the scene.
The FBI did not provide details on what weapon the person allegedly was armed with nor what actions the person took that prompted the shooting. The identity of the person was not released; neither was the person’s age and gender.
The FBI’s inspection division is investigating the agent-involved shooting, in accordance with FBI policy.
“The FBI takes all shooting incidents involving our agents or task force members seriously,” the FBI said.
The FBI did not disclose any details about the investigation that led to the warrant being served, and said it had no further details to provide on Monday’s incident.
Neighbor Kellen Hunt, whose house sits on a hill above the home where the shooting occurred, said it happened at approximately 9:30 a.m. while Hunt was changing his eight-month-old daughter’s diaper.
Hunt said he was in the living room and heard loud bangs on his neighbor’s door before authorities entered the home.
“I heard ‘Wham, wham, wham’,” Hunt said describing the knocks, “And then ‘Pop, pop, pop, pop’.”
Once Hunt heard the shots, he moved his child further inside the home.
“I had a half-naked baby and a diaper in one hand, and headed to the dining room,” Hunt said, recalling the incident.
Hunt never met or saw his neighbor who was involved in the shooting. He said he saw a Kansas City police helicopter in the air as FBI officials and first responders descended on the home in the aftermath of the shooting.
A seven-year resident of the Platte Brooke subdivision, Hunt said it is usually quiet where he lives. He said the nature of this incident pushes him to be more knowledgeable about who his neighbors are, especially as a new father.
“It’s a nationwide issue of what’s going on, but you don’t ever think it’s going to happen in your neighborhood,” he said. “It really makes you think about letting your kids play outside.”
The killing is Kansas City’s 138th homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. By this time in 2023, which was Kansas City’s deadliest year, there were 171 killings. Last year, the city ended the year with a total of 185 homicides.
