After a warmer-than-average weekend in Kansas City, cold air has moved into the metro, setting up for a chilly Thanksgiving holiday week, the National Weather Service said.

Temperatures climbed to a high of 65 degrees and fell to a low of 47 degrees on Sunday. The low on Sunday will be close to the warmest for the next seven days.

“Taking real-time observations is important,” the weather service said in a post on Facebook. “For example . . . we walked outside this morning, November 25th, and realized we much preferred November 24th.”

By 7 a.m. Monday, temperatures had plunged to 37.9 degrees at Kansas City International Airport. Breezy conditions made it feel much colder, and the wind chill temperature was 30 degrees.

Temperatures are expected to rebound to around 49 degrees, the average temperature for this time of year. But Monday will likely be the warmest day of the week.

Dry weather is expected as daytime temperatures remain in the mid-40s on Tuesday and Wednesday. Overnight temperatures are expected to dip into the mid-20s on Tuesday and the mid-30s on Wednesday.

There is a chance of light rain Wednesday into Wednesday night.

“Through the evening on Wednesday, temperatures should remain warm enough that if any precipitation does occur, most of this will be rain,” the weather service said. “For a few hours by early Thursday morning, temperatures may cool enough for an hour or two of a rain-snow mix.”

The weather service said that areas north of U.S. 36 highway in St. Joseph are more likely to see snowflakes, but no significant snow accumulation is expected. No hazardous weather is expected through Thanksgiving.

The weather will be significantly colder from Thanksgiving Day through the weekend. Daytime temperatures will be around 36 degrees on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and around 30 degrees on Sunday. Overnight temperatures will plunge into the 20s on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and the teens on Sunday.

There is a slight chance for light snow on Saturday as a clipper system scoots through.

“The story continues to be the cold temperatures with most nights and morning reach below freezing,” the weather service said.
