Kansas City woman fatally shot while in car: Police

A woman is dead following a shooting Thursday night in the Ivanhoe Northeast neighborhood of Kansas City.

Kansas City police responded to East 34th Street and Garfield Avenue around 8:15 p.m. after alleged gunfire set off ShotSpotter gunshot sensors in the area, according to Officer Alayna Gonzalez, a KCPD spokesperson.

Emergency medical personnel arrived before police and discovered a woman in a vehicle with gunshot wounds, Gonzalez said. Police believe shots were fired outside the vehicle and went through the car.

Medical responders brought the woman out of the vehicle and attempted to treat her nearby. The woman died shortly after being removed from the car, Gonzalez said.

Police had not identified a suspect in the shooting as of Thursday night.

Thursday’s shooting was the 129th homicide reported in Kansas City in 2024, according to data collected by The Star. At this time last year, 156 homicides had been reported in the city.
