A Kansas City man has been charged with murder following a fatal shooting outside a convenience store this month.

Tracy L. Parker, 37, was charged with second-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon and two counts of armed criminal action for his alleged role in the death of 36-year-old DeAnthony Guthrie.

Parker allegedly shot Guthrie multiple times in the parking lot of a convenience store at East 35th Street and Cleveland Avenue in the Palestine East neighborhood of Kansas City. Kansas City police officers responded to the shooting around 5:30 p.m. Oct. 13, according to KCPD spokesperson Sgt. Phil DiMartino.

Surveillance video from the convenience store shows Guthrie and Parker arriving in separate cars and stopping briefly in the store around 5:25, according to court documents. Upon exiting, Guthrie can be seen speaking with, and handing something to, the driver of the black Chevrolet Blazer carrying Parker, court documents read.

As Guthrie walked back to his car, Parker allegedly stepped out of the passenger seat of the Blazer and pointed a handgun at Guthrie, according to court documents. Parker raised his hands and began backing away, court documents read, at which point Guthrie stepped toward him and allegedly shot him multiple times.

A witness told police that he had given Guthrie some loose change to hand to the driver of the Blazer, according to court documents. Parker told police that Guthrie had shot him when they were teenagers, court documents read, and that the two had been incarcerated together several years ago.

Parker said that he had not seen Guthrie for about 15 years, according to court documents, but that the two had been involved in an ongoing fight that started by phone.

Parker is not currently eligible for bond. His next court date has not been set.

Guthrie’s death was the 124th homicide reported in Kansas City in 2024, according to data collected by The Star.
