One man died after he was stabbed to death in a Kansas City Northland neighborhood on Saturday morning, Kansas City police said.

Officers were dispatched just before 11 a.m. to the 8800 block of Northeast 105th Place when a caller told police a verbal argument led to someone being stabbed multiple times, KCPD spokeswoman officer Alayna Gonzalez said.

Officers found a man unresponsive and cold to the touch in a bedroom of a home, suffering from multiple puncture wounds, Gonzalez said. Paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene.

A male suspect left the scene before officers arrived. Police were trying to locate the suspect on Saturday, Gonzalez said, but did not have an exact description for the public. On Sunday, officers said they had identified a “subject of interest” in the killing, who was in custody. They said the public was not in danger at any point.

“I want to put an emphasis on this early on — this is a domestic violence situation, we believe, so we don’t have any reason to believe that there is an immediate threat to the surrounding area,” Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez said the stabbing happened between two people who knew each other. Detectives were still working to determine the suspect’s relationship with the victim on Saturday.

Police have not yet provided an age or name of the victim.

Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators were gathering evidence and talking to potential witnesses in the neighborhood on Saturday afternoon. Several area residents were outside watching as police conversed outside the home where the victim’s body was found.

The killing is Kansas City’s 123rd homicide of 2024, according to data tracked by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. At this time last year, the city had recorded 148 homicides.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Homicide detectives directly at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-8477. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information submitted anonymously to the TIPS hotline.
