Kansas City officer shoots armed suspect after 3-hour standoff at apartment: Police
A Kansas City Police Department officer shot a man after a three-hour standoff, law enforcement officials said Saturday.
Officers were dispatched around 8:30 p.m. Friday to the 3000 block of East 8th Street in Kansas City’s Independence Plaza neighborhood on a report of an armed disturbance. They found a man who matched the description given in the dispatch call at the door of a first-floor apartment.
When officers tried to speak to him, the man shut the door and barricaded himself inside the apartment, KCPD spokeswoman Alayna Gonzalez said in an email.
Officers heard gunshots from inside the residence and established a perimeter around the home, police said.
“Due to the escalation of violence displayed by the male subject, responding officers deescalated, backed away to cover, and surrounded the home to prevent escape and protect surrounding residents,” Gonzalez said.
The KCPD SWAT team and crisis negotiators arrived and tried to negotiate with the man for about three hours, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said in a news release.
Just after 11 p.m., the suspect came out of the back of the apartment armed with a handgun, police said. Officers “engaged” when the man presented a threat, Gonzalez said. A KCPD officer then fired at the man, injuring him, the patrol said in its release.
The suspect was arrested and taken to a hospital with injuries that weren’t life-threatening, the patrol said.
The Highway Patrol is investigating the shooting at the request of KCPD. After the investigation is complete, reports will be forwarded to prosecutors, the patrol said.
