Kansas City police respond to homicide Wednesday near East 49th and Agnes Avenue

Kansas City police are investigating a homicide reported late Wednesday afternoon.

Capt. Leslie Foreman, a spokeswoman for the Kansas City Police Department, said officers responded to a shooting at 4:25 p.m. in the 3000 block of East 49th Street.

Officers found a male in a black sedan who had been shot. He was unresponsive and declared dead at the scene.

There is no suspect information, Foreman said.

“It’s the middle of the day, busy time of day so we’re hopeful that someone saw something or heard something and they’ll call and help us out,” Foreman said.

At the scene of the shooting, the corner of 49th Street and Agnes Avenue remained blocked off by crime scene tape and KCPD patrol vehicles as detectives and crime scene investigators sought clues. A handful of neighbors stood from behind the crime scene tape or watched from their front porches as officers remained on scene into Wednesday evening.

Billy McGill, a resident of the neighborhood for 54 years, walked over to the scene shortly after getting home from work. He said police activity is a common sight near the apartment complex, noting that only days earlier there was a vigil for another person shot and killed near the same spot.

“Every time you look up there’s shooting. Police here, fire department here every other day, sometimes twice a day. This is the kind of stuff that needs to stop,” McGill said.

On May 10, police responded to a homicide at 49th Street and Bellefontaine Avenue, one block away. Terylle Gorham, 31, was identified as the victim of that fatal shooting, and Paul Wright, a 60-year-old man who resides in the area, was charged with second-degree murder in the killing.

Wednesday’s shooting was the 62nd homicide reported in Kansas City so far this year, according to data tracked by The Star. At this time last year, the city had recorded 58 killings. Last year became the second deadliest year on record, following a record 182 killings in 2020.

Kansas City police are encouraging anyone with information about Wednesday’s slaying to contact homicide detectives at 816-234-5043 or the anonymous TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
