Man dies after shot at Dollar Tree late Tuesday, Kansas City police say
A man shot Tuesday evening at a Dollar Tree in Kansas City has died from his injuries, police said.
Officers were called to a shooting just before 7 p.m. Tuesday at the business in the 1600 block of East 63rd Street, Sgt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman with the Kansas City Police Department, said in an email.
There, police found a man suffering from gunshots wounds. The victim, Terrel Henderson, 31, was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, Becchina said. Henderson died later that night.
“Preliminary investigation indicates the shooting occurred inside the business after a disturbance between the victim and the suspect,” Becchina said in the email.
While detectives have spoken with witnesses, no one is in custody as of Wednesday morning, he added.
A manager at the store referred a call seeking comment on the deadly shooting to the publicly traded company’s headquarters in Chesapeake, Virginia.
“We are shaken by yesterday’s incident at one of our Kansas City area stores, and our thoughts are with all of those affected,” a statement provided by Kayleigh Painter, a spokesperson for Dollar Tree, said. “The safety and security of customers and associates is our first priority. We are providing grief counselors for store associates and we are cooperating fully with local law enforcement. Since there is an active investigation, we are not able to provide further comment at this time.”
Henderson’s killing marks Kansas City’s 150th homicide of this year, according to data kept by The Star, which includes police shootings. By this time last year, Kansas City had 115 homicides.
Police are asking anyone with information on the shooting to contact homicide detectives at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477). There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information in the killing.
