Early morning shooting in Independence leaves one person dead, police say

CORRECTION: This story originally published with information from Independence police that incorrectly identified the victim as a man and by the birth name. Police said Monday that the victim was a transgender woman but could not confirm her name.

A 37-year-old Kansas City woman died early Saturday morning in a shooting in Independence, police said.

Independence police were called to 13th Street and Brookside Avenue around 3:40 a.m. Saturday, the Independence Police Department said in a Facebook post.

When officers arrived, they found a woman dead from a gunshot wound in a grassy area near the road. She was originally identified by police as a man and by the birth name but police said Monday the victim was a transgender woman. Police could not confirm her name.

The shooting is the ninth homicide in Independence this year, according to data kept by The Star which includes fatal police shootings. There had been seven by this time last year.
