More than two months after he was shot, KCPD officer returns home in ‘miracle’ recovery

More than two months after he was shot in the head pursuing a suspect, a Kansas City police officer returned home Thursday.

In an email Thursday, Kansas City Police Department spokesman Jacob Becchina said the officer, who received treatment at an out of state rehabilitation facility, had returned to Kansas City to continue his treatment at an outpatient facility.

The officer, who has asked for privacy, was shot at 31st Street and Van Brunt Boulevard in early July as he responded to a call about a man waving a gun at a McDonald’s location. The suspect ran away before turning and shooting at pursuing officers, police said. A second officer fired back, killing 31-year-old Ky Johnson.

The officer was rushed to Truman Medical Center where he received emergency surgery. He was transferred out of Truman Medical Center to the out of state facility on July 23, police said.

Seventy-seven days after the traumatic head injury, Becchina said, the officer is walking and talking.

“Our officer has showed us his amazing strength and determination by returning home with his family and loved ones near him,” Becchina said in an email. “His recovery so far has truly been a miracle.”

In a written statement Thursday, the officer’s family thanked the Kansas City community and others who have reached out for their support.

“Without God and everyone’s support, he wouldn’t be back here today,” the statement said. “We are forever grateful to everyone who has been a part of his journey. We can’t thank you enough.”
