Prosecutors charge third teen for fatal shooting of 19-year-old in Raytown

A Kansas City 17-year-old was charged Friday in the shooting death of a 19-year-old in Raytown last month, according to a news release from the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office.

Deterice R. Doss is charged with second degree murder and armed criminal action in Jackson County Circuit Court. Prosecutors allege he shot and killed Lucas Jester during an attempted drug deal last month.

Jester, 19, was found dead inside a car in the 8400 block of Lane Drive in Raytown on Monday night after police responded to reports of gunshots in the area, according to the Raytown Police Department.

According to court records, Doss accompanied a friend, Xzaveion King, to purchase marijuana from Jester. King told police that while he and Doss were inspecting the drugs in Jester’s car, Doss pulled a gun and shot Jester.

King told police that Doss had a history of armed robberies and had stolen the gun he used during the shooting months earlier, records said.

When he was arrested, prosecutors say, Doss told police he had shot Jester in self defense before fleeing the scene. He said he had accompanied King to the drug deal as a witness and that King had told him he planned to rob Jester.

Doss is the third teen charged in Jester’s killing.

Last month, prosecutors charged Aaron Michael Hays with second-degree murder and delivery of a controlled substance. Police said Hays was in Jester’s passenger seat during the shooting and fled on foot. A witness told police Hays had said Jester died in a “drug deal gone bad.”

King was charged Wednesday with second-degree murder.
