Man shot Thursday night outside Kansas City gas station dies at hospital, police say
A 41-year-old man was fatally shot Thursday evening outside a Kansas City gas station, police said.
Officers were called about 8 p.m. to the 4600 block of Prospect Avenue on a shooting, said Officer Doaa El-Ashkar, a spokeswoman with the Kansas City Police Department.
Police identified the victim as Patrick J. Hicks, who found inside a vehicle suffering from gunshot wounds, she said. Hicks was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
Witnesses at the scene told police that a dark-colored sedan believed to be the suspect vehicle left the scene and headed south on Prospect, El-Ashkar said.
No arrests had been made as of Thursday evening.
Crime scene investigators continued to work the homicide scene late into Thursday night. A couple dozen orange evidence markers were placed beside scattered shell casings near one of the gas pumps.
A couple meters away, the car Hicks was found inside sat haphazardly in the middle of the road. Officers with flashlights surrounded it.
Thursday’s killing marks Kansas City’s 134th homicide of this year, according to data kept by The Star, which includes police shootings. By this time last year, Kansas City had 102 homicides.
Across the entire metro area, there have been 191 homicides this year.
Anyone with information about this deadly shooting is asked to call the Kansas City Police Department’s Homicide Unit at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477). A reward of up to $25,000 for tips leading to an arrest in this case.
