Update: Police identified the victims of the shooting. A new story can be found here.
Two people were found dead in Kansas City’s East Bottoms, where police responded to a shooting Tuesday evening.
Jahmiere Green, 18, and Brandon Rainey, 22, were found in a vehicle near Guinotte and North Montgall avenues, Sgt. Jake Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department, said. Officers responded to reports of gunshots and the shooting around 8 p.m.
No suspect information was available as of 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. Detectives are canvassing the area for witnesses and evidence.
Becchina said the two men were given aid, but pronounced dead at the scene.
“There’s a large establishment just around the corner that brings in the possibility of people coming or going,” Becchina said.
The intersection is near J. Rieger & Co. and roughly a block from Knuckleheads Saloon.
Anyone with information is asked to contact homicide detectives directly at 234-5043 or the TIPS hotline anonymously at 474-TIPS. There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest in this case, police said.
The killings are the 132nd and 133rd homicides in Kansas City this year, according to data kept by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. There had been 99 homicides in the city by this time last year.
Gun violence will be the subject of a new, statewide journalism project The Star is undertaking in Missouri this year in partnership with the national service program Report for America and sponsored in part by Missouri Foundation for Health. As part of this project, The Star will seek the community’s help.
