A young man remains missing after he was swept away while swimming in a Kansas City creek over the weekend, police said.
Police were called about 7:30 p.m. Sunday to assist with a possible drowning in a section of Indian Creek beneath 103rd Street, Kansas City Police Department Spokeswoman Doaa Al-Ashkar said in an email Monday.
Several teenagers were swimming in the creek, just south of the bridge, when one was swept away by the current, Al-Ashkar said. The victim was later identified as 19-year-old Trevion Mcafee.
Witnesses told police that the victim, who could not swim, went underwater just north of the bridge and did not re-surface.
Someone who was with the group had tried to help the victim, but could not get to him, Al-Ashkar said.
Fire personnel spent four hours looking for the victim Sunday evening, but had to put the search on hold because of approaching thunderstorms, she said. Members of the victim’s family were told what happened at the scene.
Water patrol continued searching for Mcafee on Monday.
