After record-breaking week, KC metro records less than 250 new COVID-19 cases Sunday
Health officials reported Sunday an additional 246 confirmed coronavirus infections and no new deaths across the Kansas City metropolitan area.
In total, the virus has infected 16,781 of the metro’s residents, killing 302.
Those figures are up from the 13,858 infections and 287 deaths to date reported last week. Two weeks before, there had been 11,428 cases and 259 deaths to date, according to data maintained by The Star.
Before Sunday, the metro recorded more than 400 new COVID-19 cases each day for four days in a row.
The region, which encompasses Kansas City and Jackson, Clay and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas, reported 473 new cases Saturday, 495 Friday and 605 Thursday — the highest number of new cases in the metro in a single day since the pandemic began.
It was the third time in less than a week that the metro broke its record.
As of Sunday, Johnson County outpaced other counties in the region in the number of virus-related deaths, with 94 deaths and 4,455 cases. That’s up from 3,744 infections last week.
There have been 4,065 cases and 91 deaths in Wyandotte County. Last week, the county reported 89 deaths and 3,655 cases.
Kansas City has the highest number of cases in the metro with 4,785, including 45 deaths. That’s up from 38 deaths and 3,715 cases last week.
Jackson County has reported 2,507 infections and 47 deaths. Last week, the county had 1,912 cases and 45 deaths.
Clay County has seen 717 cases, including 19 deaths. That’s up from 625 cases and 13 deaths last week.
In Platte County, officials confirmed 252 cases, including six deaths. That’s up from 207 cases last week.
Throughout Missouri, 41,927 residents have been infected, including 1,197 who have died. That’s up from 33,094 infections and 1,129 deaths last week. The positive test rate is 6.4%.
When it last updated its data Friday, Kansas confirmed 25,109 cases, including 326 deaths. That’s up from 21,965 infections and 299 deaths last week. The positive test rate is 9%.
COVID-19 has infected more than 4.2 million Americans, the most cases discovered in any country. More than 146,000 people have died from the virus in the United States., according to data maintained by Johns Hopkins University.
