Woman shot and killed while pushing baby in stroller Monday in Kansas City: police

Update: Police identified the woman as 20-year-old Diamon Eichelburger on Tuesday. Police also corrected the age of the baby, saying the child was a one year old.

A woman pushing a baby in a stroller was fatally shot Monday in the 2700 block of Van Brunt Boulevard in Kansas City, according to police.

Officers responded just before 11:30 a.m. to a 7-Eleven gas station where they found the woman unresponsive on the ground in the parking lot, according to the Kansas City Police Department. She was pronounced dead.

Witnesses told detectives the woman was killed while pushing a one-year-old baby in a stroller in the parking lot.

The child, as far as police know, was not injured in the shooting but was taken to a hospital to be checked out, said Officer Doaa El-Ashkar, a police spokeswoman.

The woman was killed by gunfire that came from an unknown vehicle, police said.

Detectives were searching the area for any surveillance cameras and witnesses to determine what led up to the shooting.

The killing marked the 110th homicide this year in Kansas City, according to data maintained by The Star that includes law enforcement shootings. By this time last year, there had been 79 killings.

People watched detectives search the area as yellow crime scene tape flapped in the wind. A woman who arrived at the crime scene screamed, her cry piercing through music that played out of the gas station’s speakers, as a victim advocate and officers tried to comfort her.

Gun violence will be the subject of a new, statewide journalism project The Star is undertaking in Missouri this year in partnership with the national service program Report for America and sponsored in part by Missouri Foundation for Health. As part of this project, The Star will seek the community’s help.
