Fatal hit-and-run crash involving three vehicles closes bridge in Kansas City, Kansas

Police closed the Kansas River bridge in Kansas City, Kansas Monday morning after a fatal hit-and-run crash involving three vehicles on Seventh Street Trafficway.

Rescue crews responded to the crash about 7:25 a.m. Monday near Seventh Street Trafficway and Cheyenne Avenue.

“Be advised the bridge is currently closed both directions between Cheyenne and Metropolitan” avenues, the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department said on Twitter. “Drivers should avoid the area.”

According to the preliminary investigation, a dark-colored pickup was headed north on the bridge at high speeds when it cross the median and side-swiped a silver Honda and then crashed into a white utility truck head on, according to Officer Dustin Dierenfeldt, a spokesman for the Kansas City, Kansas, Police Department.

The driver of the Honda, a man in his late 20s or early 30s, died at the scene. A passenger in the vehicle was uninjured. The driver of the vehicle that was hit head on also was not injured.

The driver of the pickup ran from the scene. Suspect information was not available, Dierenfeldt said.
