Man killed in attempted robbery Sunday in Kansas City; police search for suspects
Police are investigating an attempted robbery that turned deadly early Sunday in Kansas City.
Officers responded to an assault about 1:20 a.m. Sunday at East 40th Street and Jackson Avenue, Sgt. Jacob Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department, said in an email.
When police and an ambulance arrived, they found an unresponsive man in the street next to a vehicle, Becchina said. He was declared dead at the scene.
Witnesses told police the man was stopped inside a vehicle and confronted by at least one suspect as part of an attempted robbery.
An altercation unfolded and the man was fatally injured, witnesses also told police. More details on the man’s identity and on the nature of his injuries were not immediately available.
The killing was the 108th homicide in Kansas City this year, according to data kept by The Star that includes fatal police shootings. There had been 78 homicides in Kansas City by this time last year.
An award up to $25,000 is available for information leading to an arrest in any homicide investigation, police said.
Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
