A man was killed in a shooting Wednesday evening in Kansas City, according to police.
Officers responded to calls of gunfire about 7:15 p.m. in the area of Chestnut Avenue and East 27th Street, according to the Kansas City Police Department.
When officers arrived, witnesses directed them between two houses, where police found an unresponsive man on the ground, said Officer Doaa El-Ashkar, a department spokeswoman. The man died at the scene.
Witness told police the suspect fled the area in a green Pontiac. Police later found the vehicle.
A person of interest has since been taken into custody, El-Ashkar said.
The killing marked the 97th this year in Kansas City, according to data maintained by The Star, which includes law enforcement shootings. By this time last year, there had been 68 homicides.
About two dozen people, including young children, watched as detectives processed the scene. One woman wept, pacing as she yelled into her phone and asking the person on the other end if the victim was a relative.
Police urged anyone with information about the shooting to call the homicide unit at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
