Homicide investigation underway after man fatally shot at Kansas City home

Kansas City police have launched a homicide investigation after a man was fatally shot at a home Monday.

The shooting was reported about 5:15 p.m. at 16th Street and Elmwood Avenue.

According to Sgt. Jacob Becchina, a Kansas City police spokesman, callers told police a man inside a residence there was struck by gunshots that came from outside the home.

The victim was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

The Kansas City Police Department later identified the man as 50-year-old Paul Garcia.

Becchina said multiple people were outside at the time of the shooting.

Witnesses told police they saw two or three male suspects outside the home, firing shots from the street toward the residence. The suspects were seen getting into a silver or white four-door sedan. The car then left from the west side of the area.

No arrests have been reported.

Detectives and crime scene personnel remained at the scene Monday evening, canvassing for witnesses and collecting evidence.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Kansas City Police Department Homicide Unit at 816-234-5043 or call the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-8477. A reward of up to $25,000 is being offered for information leading to an arrest in the case.

The killing marks at least the 90th homicide reported in Kansas City this year, according to data maintained by The Star. By this time last year, 63 homicides had been recorded.

Gun violence will be the subject of a new, statewide journalism project The Star is undertaking in Missouri this year in partnership with the national service program Report for America and sponsored in part by Missouri Foundation for Health. As part of this project, The Star will seek the community’s help.
