Two people found dead in Northland home hours after disturbance, standoff

Police officers found a man and a woman deceased inside a home following an hours-long standoff in a Northland neighborhood Monday.

Kansas City police were initially called just before 10 a.m. to the home in the 9400 block of N.E. 91st Street in reference to a report of a person armed with a gun and gunshots being heard, Sgt. Jacob Becchina, a police spokesman, said in an email.

Callers reported seeing a disturbance between a man and a woman and then hearing gunshots inside the residence.

Police officers responded to the scene as well as tactical response officers and negotiators. A standoff was initiated as police tried to contact the people inside the home. Some neighboring homes were evacuated.

Around 2:30 p.m., police officers decided to enter the residence after receiving no response during the attempted negotiations. Inside the home, a man and a woman were found dead from what appeared to be gunshot wounds. The identities of the deceased have not been released.

The scene has been turned over to homicide detectives. Part of N.E. 91st Street remained blocked off as police continued investigating.

Gun violence will be the subject of a new, statewide journalism project The Star is undertaking in Missouri this year in partnership with the national service program Report for America and sponsored in part by Missouri Foundation for Health. As part of this project, The Star will seek the community’s help.
