One man killed, another injured in shooting Sunday near 18th and Vine in Kansas City
One man was killed and another was injured in a shooting early Sunday near 18th and Vine streets in Kansas City, police said.
Police responding to the shooting about 1:45 a.m. found a man on the ground in a nearby parking lot. The man had apparently been shot, and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel, according to the Kansas City Police Department.
Later, another man injured at the same location arrived at a hospital by private car, said Officer Doaa El-Ashkar, a police spokeswoman, in an email Sunday morning.
Police had no information about a suspect, El-Ashkar said. Detectives were speaking with witnesses and trying to gather evidence. Crime scene investigators were to process the scene for evidence.
“I am deeply disappointed that a festive day ended again in tragedy in my home district at 18th & Vine,” Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas tweeted Sunday morning. “Long after establishments had closed, gunfire rang out. We’ll pursue every option available to ensure residents and businesses in the area can be safe.”
Last month, one person was killed and four were injured in an early morning shooting in the same area of 18th and Vine. Police were called around 2:30 a.m. on June 6 after they believe a fight led to a shooting in a nearby parking lot.
Sunday’s killing was the 88th homicide in Kansas City this year according to data kept by The Star which includes fatal police shootings. There had been 63 by this time last year.
Anyone with information about the shooting was asked to call the homicide unit at 816-234-5043 or the anonymous TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477. A $25,000 cash reward is offered for tips that lead to an arrest.
Gun violence will be the subject of a new, statewide journalism project The Star is undertaking in Missouri this year in partnership with the national service program Report for America and sponsored in part by Missouri Foundation for Health. As part of this project, The Star will seek the community’s help.
