Officers found the unresponsive victim with a head injury near Thompson and Monroe avenues. Emergency medical workers pronounced the man dead at the scene, El-Ashkar said.

Samantha Parker, a neighbor, said she noticed police taping off the street around a couch on the sidewalk early Monday morning. Then she noticed what looked like a man lying on the couch. She could only see his shoulder.

Police later put a sheet over the couch, Parker, 22, said as she stood outside a nearby home a few hours after the crime scene had been cleared.

Detectives canvassed the area looking for witnesses while crime scene investigators collected evidence.

No suspect information was available.

The man’s death is the city’s 86th homcide of the year. That compares to 61 homicides reported by this time last year.

Across the entire Kansas City metro area, there have been 123 homicides so far this year.

Anyone with information about the homicide is asked to call the Kansas City Police Department’s Homicide Unit at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).

Information leading to an arrest could be eligible for a $25,000 cash reward.
