Police identify 21-year-old man who died in shooting outside Northland Price Chopper
Kansas City police identified a 21-year-old man who died after being shot in the parking lot of a Price Chopper Monday evening. Police said they believe the homicide is the result of attempted robbery.
Officers found the victim, Trinton Phillips, suffering from a gunshot wound inside a car, Officer Doaa El-Ashkar, a Kansas City police spokeswoman, said at the time. Phillips died at the scene. Police released the victim’s identity Tuesday morning.
The shooting was reported before 5:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Northland store at 9717 N. Ash Ave.
A male suspect left the scene in a dark-colored sedan, police said in the update Tuesday.
Part of the grocery store parking lot was blocked off Monday evening as police investigated.
“As you can see here, it’s quite a big parking lot. There are still quite a few people to talk to, so the detectives are still canvassing, still trying to talk to witnesses, trying to find out what happened here today,” El-Ashkar told reporters in the hours after the shooting.
Anyone with information is asked to call the police department’s homicide unit at 816-234-5043 or call the TIPS Hotline anonymously at 816-474-8477. A reward of $25,000 is offered for information leading to an arrest in this case and other unsolved homicide cases.
The killing Monday is the 83rd homicide reported in Kansas City this year, according to data kept by The Star. By this time last year, the city recorded 60 homicides.
