Surveillance video shows two suspects in May 4 homicide in KC’s River Market area

Kansas City police have released surveillance video showing two suspects in a May 4 homicide outside the Cold Storage Lofts at 500 East 3rd Street in the River Market area.

The video shows the suspect in the moments after the shooting, according to the Kansas City Police Department. The victim was later identified as Charles Shirley, 41, and the killing has not been solved.

Several witnesses said two males approached the entrance of the parking lot of the building, Sgt. Janice Heins said in a video released by the department Thursday. Shirley was sitting in a vehicle nearby. One of the suspects approached Shirley and immediately started firing.

The two suspects fled and got into a blue Toyota Camry.

Heins said police have identified the vehicle as a rental car.

“We are looking for information of who would have had possession of that vehicle on that day or any day surrounding,” she said.

Shirley’s death was the city’s 57th homicide this year, according to data maintained by The Star.

Shirley was a 41-year-old father of four who had recently started his own business, Finessed Clothing, a family member said. Years earlier, his younger brother had also been shot and killed inside a car in Kansas City.

Charles Shirley, 41, was found shot and killed in a car near the Cold Storage Lofts in the River Market on Monday. His brother was killed in Kansas City 16 years earlier.
