Man dies after police find him lying in Kansas City intersection with gunshot wounds

Police responding to reports of shots being fired found a man lying in the street late Wednesday in Kansas City.

The man, who had been shot multiple times, died shortly after being rushed to a hospital, Sgt. Jacob Becchina, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department, said in an email.

The sound of gunfire was reported shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Sixth Street and Monroe Avenue. While officers were responding, the call was upgraded to a shooting.

Arriving officers rendered first aid. Emergency medical workers rushed the victim to a hospital where he died shortly thereafter.

Detectives scoured the area looking for witnesses while crime scene investigators collected evidence.

No suspect information was available Thursday morning.

The man’s death is the 65th homicide of the year in Kansas City. By this time last year, there had been 50 homicides in Kansas City.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Kansas City Police Department’s homicide unit at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).

The shooting is the second homicide in the area in the last two nights, Becchina said. There are no indications that the two cases are related.

Two men were found shot to death late Tuesday inside a house in the 600 block of Elmwood Avenue.

“We are hoping that with the proximity to Independence Avenue where many people are driving or walking that someone may have seen something that would help detectives,” Becchina said.

There is a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest in the homicides.
