Homicide investigation underway in the Northland, Kansas City police say
Kansas City police were investigating a homicide Thursday night outside an apartment complex in the Northland.
According to police dispatch, a shooting was reported around 8:40 p.m. in the 600 block of N.E. 38th Street.
Police officers responded and found a man who had been shot, lying in the parking lot of an apartment complex located at that address, according to Officer Doaa El-Ashkar, a Kansas City police spokeswoman. The man died at the scene.
Police later identified the man as Stan Butler, 62.
A person of interest was taken into custody for questioning.
Detectives continued canvassing the area for witnesses and further information to learn what led up to the shooting. Crime scene technicians were processing the scene for evidence late Thursday night.

The killing is the 52nd homicide reported this year in Kansas City, according to data kept by The Star. It is also the third homicide reported in the city within the past two days. Around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, a 24-year-old woman was found fatally shot in the parking lot of a Family Dollar store in the 8200 block of Troost Avenue. Shortly after 12:30 a.m. Thursday, a 20-year-old man died in a shooting reported in the parking lot of apartments in the 8300 block of Hillcrest Road.
