Murder charge filed after man found shot to death in Kansas City, Kansas home

A suspect was arrested and charged with murder this week in connection to a Kansas City, Kansas, killing that occurred in April.

The Wyandotte County District Attorney’s Office charged Laron E. Betts, 45, with second-degree murder and criminal damage to property, a misdemeanor, in connection to the April 21 shooting death of 45-year-old Michael Castleberry.

Kansas City, Kansas, police were called just before 11:20 a.m. April 21 to the 1800 block of Walker Avenue after a neighbor heard heard a gunshot. Officers responded to the scene and found Castleberry dead inside a home.

Police said in a Twitter post Wednesday that a suspect, identified as Betts, was taken into custody and charged.

Online court records were not available Friday showing an attorney listed for Betts. Bond has been set at $500,000.

At least 11 homicides have been reported in Kansas City, Kansas, this year, according to data kept by The Star. By this time last year, the city recorded six homicides.
