Man found shot and killed in parking lot of Kansas City apartment complex

Police were investigating a homicide early Thursday morning after a man was found fatally shot in a parking lot to a Kansas City apartment building.

Officers responded shortly after 12:30 a.m. to the Hillcrest Estates apartments in the 8300 block of Hillcrest Road on a report of a shooting, Officer Doaa El-Ashkar, a spokeswoman for Kansas City police, said in an email.

Arriving officers found a man lying on the ground in the parking lot with a gunshot wound. Emergency medical workers pronounced the man dead at the scene, El-Ashkar said. The victim was later identified as 20-year-old Christopher Davis.

Detectives were gathering information to develop suspect information and determine what led up to the shooting. Crime scene investigators were collecting evidence, she said.

The man’s death is Kansas City’s 51st homicide of the year, according to data tracked by The Star. That compares to 46 homicides in Kansas City by this time in 2019.

Across the entire Kansas City metro area, there have been 75 homicides so far this year.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Kansas City Police Department Homicide Unit at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477). Information leading to an arrest could result in a $25,000 reward.

Gun violence will be the subject of a new, statewide journalism project The Star is undertaking in Missouri this year in partnership with the national service program Report for America. As part of this project, The Star will seek the community’s help. To contribute, visit Report for America online at reportforamerica.org.
