Man wanted on charges he fatally shot father of girlfriend’s children in Kansas City
A Kansas City, Kansas man has been charged with second-degree murder after witnesses identified him as the gunman in a killing earlier this month in Kansas City, court records show.
An arrest warrant was issued Friday for 33-year-old Ivon Mock, who is accused of fatally shooting Daniel Washington, 33, as he sat in a car with three other people April 12 in the 4000 block of Agnes Avenue, according to Jackson County court documents.
One of the witnesses, Mock’s girlfriend, told detectives that shortly after she stopped her SUV in the area early that morning, Mock walked over to the driver’s side door and opened it from the outside. He reached in as if to hug her and noticed the car’s other occupants, including Washington, who had children with the woman, detectives wrote in a probable cause statement.
“Oh, ya’ll here,” Mock told the people in the car, she recalled.
Mock then pulled out a black handgun and fired several times, striking Washington, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, according to charging documents.
The woman drove away, searching for a nearby hospital. She saw a Kansas City Police Department van in the parking lot of a CVS Pharmacy at 39th and Main streets in the Midtown area, more than two miles west of the shooting scene. She flagged down an officer.
More officers responded about 3:10 a.m. to the parking lot, where they found Washington dead inside the SUV.
The three witnesses were taken to police headquarters in downtown Kansas City, where they gave statements.
Mock’s girlfriend told detectives she and Washington maintained a close friendship but were not romantically involved. In an interview room, the woman told someone on the phone her boyfriend killed her “baby daddy and best friend,” police wrote. Mock had accused her of cheating on him with Washington, detectives noted in a report.
Crime scene technicians recovered five shell casings during the investigation.
The shooting marked Kansas City’s 47th homicide this year, according to data kept by The Star. By that time last year, the city had recorded 41 homicides. Across the metro area, there have been 68 homicides so far in 2020.
Mock was also charged with armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon. He did not yet have an attorney listed in court records who could be reached for comment.
