Man allegedly fatally stabs, runs over victim during carjacking in Kansas City park

Prosecutors on Wednesday charged a 36-year-old Kansas City man with murder in a fatal stabbing during a carjacking in Blue Valley Park, according to a release.

The Jackson County prosecutor charged Corey L. Darden with first-degree murder, first-degree robbery and two counts of armed criminal action in the death of 41-year-old Felipe Carillo of Kansas City.

Police had responded to the park in the 2300 block of Topping Avenue about 3 p.m. Monday on reports of a pedestrian being struck and killed by vehicle. Shortly thereafter, police discovered that Carillo had been stabbed and was intentionally run down with his own vehicle, saying his death was a homicide.

Carillo’s family has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to help meet his family’s financial needs. In the post, they said Carillo leaves behind his wife and six children, ranging in ages between 1 and 20 years old.

Witnesses told police that they had seen a man walk up to a Jeep, where he got into an argument with the victim inside and then into a physical altercation, according to court documents.

The victim fled from the Jeep and the man allegedly got in and intentionally ran over the victim, witnesses told police.

According to court documents:

Darden allegedly told detectives that he had gone to the park and saw Carillo alone in his Jeep parked by a gazebo. Darden allegedly said he likes Jeeps and decided to take Carillo’s.

When he walked up to the victim, Darden said Carillo had an attitude toward him. Darden allegedly pulled out a red switchblade knife and told Carillo to get out.

Darden allegedly stabbed Carillo once and told him to move over. When Carillo “started to act tough,” Darden allegedly told detectives he stabbed Carillo in the stomach.

Carillo fled from the Jeep and started to run through the park. Darden allegedly told detectives that he drove after him, intentionally running him over.

After running Carillo over, Darden attempted to flee the park in the Jeep, but crashed into a rock at a stop light near 23rd Street and Topping.

Darden ran from the Jeep and got into a car that had stopped to check on the crash. Darden demanded that he be driven home. A woman gave him a wipe to clean his hands.

When being questioned, Darden allegedly told detectives that he ran over Carillo for God and the woman he loved and he would do it again because Carillo had “evil” in his eyes.
