Homicide investigation underway after man fatally stabbed in Independence, police say

An Independence man was fatally stabbed Sunday evening in Independence, marking the city’s first homicide this year.

Officers were called before 5:40 p.m. to the 2900 block of South Hawthorne Avenue, where they found the victim, according to the Independence Police Department.

The victim, identified Monday as Jose Gotay, 37, of Independence, was taken to a hospital where he died from his wounds, Officer John Syme, a police spokesman, said in an email to reporters.

Police encouraged anyone with information about the killing to call the Kansas City Metro Crime Stoppers’ TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477 or the police department’s hotline at 816-325-7777. Tipsters can also email leads@indepmo.org, police said.

Independence had reported two homicides by this time in 2019, according to data kept by The Star.
