Man pleads guilty to shooting person who interrupted car burglary in Prairie Village

A Kansas City, Kansas, resident pleaded guilty Friday to attempted second-degree murder in the June 2018 shooting of a man who interrupted a car burglary in Prairie Village, prosecutors said.

Jacob Chaney, 29, also pleaded guilty in Johnson County District Court to aggravated assault, felon in possession of a firearm, auto burglary and felony fleeing and eluding, Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe announced.

The charges stemmed from a shooting that officers responded to at 11:35 p.m. June 15, 2018, in the 2500 block of 73rd Street. The victim was shot multiple times and was in stable condition at the time, police said.

In charging documents, Chaney was accused of entering three vehicles that day. He fired multiple rounds at a man in an attempted to kill him, according to prosecutors.

Chaney’s guilty plea also stemmed from an aggravated burglary and a police pursuit Oct. 14, 2017, in Fairway, according to prosecutors.

Sentencing was set for June 4.
