Police investigate Kansas City’s 23rd homicide this year after reported shooting

Update: Police on Monday identified the victim as 39-year-old Antonio Smith.

Kansas City police were investigating a homicide Sunday afternoon in the 6700 block of Monroe Avenue.

Officers responded about 4 p.m. to a reported shooting in the area, where they found a man on the ground outside, said Capt. David Jackson, a spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department.

Smith died at the scene.

Witnesses told police they heard a disturbance and found the man. They also said several people ran from the area.

The man’s cause of death remained under investigation, Jackson said.

No suspects were in custody as of Sunday evening, police said.

About a dozen people gathered at the crime scene. Among them was a woman who worried the slain man was her brother.

“Right now, I just feel lost,” she said. “I feel numb.”

The killing marked the 23rd homicide this year in Kansas City, according to data kept by The Star, which includes fatal police shootings. By this time last year, there had been 20 killings.

Anyone with information about the slaying was asked to call the Kansas City Police Department’s Homicide Unit at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-8477.
