Police investigate death of man found near bus stop on Kansas City’s west side
Update: Police on Monday said they were investigating the incident as a homicide. The victim was identified as 62-year-old Rolando Perez-Garcia.
A man found unresponsive near a bus stop on Kansas City’s west side died at a hospital Sunday, prompting police to open an investigation.
Officers responded to a medical call shortly before 8 a.m. Sunday and found the man in the 2300 block of Summit Street, Officer Doaa El-Ashkar of the Kansas City Police Department said in an email.
Emergency medical workers took the man to a hospital where he later died.
Homicide detectives were searching the area for witnesses while crime scene investigators gathered evidence.
Police have not said how the man died. A resident of a nearby apartment building, who asked not to be identified for his safety, said he heard a gunshot early Sunday. He said neighbors reported hearing four or five gunshots.
The man who died was known to frequent the area and surrounding neighborhoods and may have been homeless, the resident said.
“He was always friendly … he was not a troublemaker,” the resident said. “It’s sad.”
Police said Perez-Garcia was homeless and that they have been unable to locate any next of kin in the area.
Anyone with information about the man or his death was asked to call the Kansas City Police Department’s Homicide Unit at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
