Double shooting leaves one dead, another injured near apartments in south Kansas City

Police responding to a report of gunfire found one man fatally shot and another wounded late Sunday near apartments in south Kansas City, police said.

The shooting occurred shortly after 10 p.m. Sunday near 115th Street and Holiday Drive, which is near Longview Road and Blue Ridge Boulevard, Officer Doaa El-Ashkar, a spokeswoman for the Kansas City Police Department, said in an email.

Arriving officers found the body of 22-year-old Derrick Donahue outside the Jefferson Place East apartment complex. He had been shot, and emergency medical workers declared him dead at the scene, she said.

Donahue’s relatives declined to comment Monday.

While investigating the shooting, witnesses alerted officers to another male shooting victim at a nearby apartment complex. The man was taken to a hospital where he was reported to be in stable condition, El-Ashkar said.

Outside the Jefferson Place East apartments, a red heart-shaped balloon was fixed to a sidewalk. It read, “RIP cuzzo.”

A woman at the apartment said she went outside after being told about the shooting and saw her cousin lying dead on a sidewalk.

Detectives were canvassing the area and speaking with witnesses while crime scene investigators collected evidence.

The circumstances of the shootings were not known.

The slaying is the 21st homicide in Kansas City and 29th in the metro area so far this year, according to data kept by The Star, which includes police shootings. That compares to 14 homicides in Kansas City by this time last year.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call the Kansas City Police Department’s Homicide Unit at 816-234-5043 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477). Information leading to an arrest could bring a reward up to $25,000.
